How do gas struts work?

Gas struts are pressurised using nitrogen and oil. The struts are completely sealed to keep the gas and oil from leaking out. The struts reach a maximum point of extension under no load (or the weight it was intended to support).

When pressed down, the nitrogen compresses, and the oil acts as a dampener to smooth out the movement of the strut. When removing the load, the strut will return to its maximum point of extension. That allows you to hold hoods and trunk lids open, adjust your seat height, or slow down the speed at which a door closes.
